Will Spurs pay £60 million to sign Anthony Martial?

Anthony Martial has emerged as a transfer target for clubs around Europe, with the Frenchman reportedly turning down a five-year extension to his current contract at Manchester United. The 22 year-old was signed for a world record fee for a teenager back in 2015, paying £36 million to secure his services from Monaco. He started off very impressively under Louis van Gaal, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.

Since Jose Mourinho’s arrival though, things have changed. Under competition from the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford, Wayne Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata last season, he often found himself on the bench. Mourinho’s insistence from his wingers to help out in defence did him no favours. In the end, he only made 25 appearances in the Premier League, scoring just 4 times in the competition.

Martial is undoubtedly a player with supreme talent. He has blistering pace, and can beat his man with ease on the wing. He is also a very good finisher, but has somehow never been utilized as a centre-forward at United. Mourinho’s preference for a big, strong man up front saw Ibrahimovic replaced by Romelu Lukaku in the summer.

Lingard’s meteoric rise in the first-team, and tough competition from Rashford saw Martial’s chances in the first-team being few and far between in the first half of the season. Alexis Sanchez’s arrival in the summer from Arsenal has furthered dampened his opportunities. Since the Chilean signed back in January, the latter has only started Premier League games.

Despite his time in the first-team being few and far between, he has managed 11 goals and 9 assists in all competitions. There is definitely a lot of untapped potential there.

According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur could be one of the clubs looking to sign Martial in the summer. The player is valued at £60 million by United, and it remains to be seen if Spurs are willing to pay that kind of money. Mauricio Pochettino currently has the likes of Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura, and Erik Lamela as options on his wing, but the infusion of Martial will be an incredible statement of intent from the North London club.

If available, Martial is definitely a player Spurs should look to sign. Considering his age and potential, £60 million is arguably a bargain. Playing under a manager who will give him complete license to spread his wings and run at the opposition will make him a much, much better player. Linking up with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Delli Alli and Harry Kane will enable him to flourish.

The situation will become clearer in the days to come, and one would assume that more clubs will line up to bid for his signature, if United are willing to listen to offers.
